The Importance of Orphan Sponsorship

In areas that are hit by conflict and disaster, the poorest of communities are often pushed into survival mode. With the lack of food, shelter and limited access to any form of medical care, children who are left without parents solely depend on the support of others. Poverty strips away the innocence of these children and takes away their future dreams.

Your support can provide more than just material sustenance. Through becoming an orphan sponsor, you reassure a sense of belonging and belief into a child’s life. By sponsoring an orphan, you restore safety, hope and dignity.

Islamic Teachings on Caring for Orphans

Supporting an orphan is largely emphasised in Islam. The Quran frequently tells the believers to honour the orphan and to treat them with justice and compassion.

“And give food, despite their desire for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive.” [Quran 76:8]

“They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend [in charity]. Say, “Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveller. And whatever you do of good, indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” [Quran 2:215]

Allah often warns the believers against neglecting and mistreating the orphan.

“So as for the orphan, do not oppress him” [Quran 93:9]

“Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? That is the one who drives away the orphan.” [Quran 107:1-2]

Sponsoring an orphan is a noble act of worship and an expression of hope and compassion.

It has been narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) said “I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like these two,”
and he joined his forefinger and middle finger together. [Tirmidhi]

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) has said “The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well-treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill-treated.” [Bukhari]

It has also been narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) has said “Blessed is the wealth of the Muslim, from which he gives to the poor, the orphan and the wayfarer.” [Muslim]

Sponsoring an orphan becomes a form of Sadaqah Jaariyah, an ongoing charity in which the reward continues to increase as the child grows, learns and thrives due to your given support. By sponsoring an orphan, you are helping the child, as well as earning blessings for your life here and in the hereafter.

“When a man dies, all his good deeds come to an end except three: On going charity (Sadaqah Jaariyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him.” [Darussalam]

Sponsorship can begin with a monthly donation of £30, a contribution that can change the life of a child. This support will cover the child’s most essential needs, giving us a chance to deliver meals, access to education and medical care. We will also be providing safe housing and emotional support to those who have been impacted by emotional trauma.

Upon sponsorship, you will have access to connect with the child and their extended family (if they have one). You will receive regular updates about the child you are supporting, allowing you to see the impact your donation is making. Through this sponsorship program, you will get the chance to watch the child grow, succeed at school and blossom for a bright future ahead.
